What is a joint sealing machine?
A joint sealing machine is used to fill cracks and joint gaps in the road surface with hot applied bitumen or bitumen-rubber based sealant. The machine melts the solid sealant in a kettle, keeps it at application temperature and delivers it directly into the crack through a hose and application wand.
How crack sealing extends road life
Water entering through open cracks reaches below the top layer and weakens the lower layers; with freeze-thaw the crack widens and soon turns into a pothole. Closing cracks early with a flexible sealant prevents water ingress. For this reason joint sealing is regarded as a far lower-cost preventive maintenance method than complete resurfacing.
Points to watch during application
Before sealing, the crack should be cleaned of dust, vegetation and loose material, the surface should be dry, and the material should be applied at the temperature recommended by its manufacturer for good adhesion.
