What is a towed road sweeper?

A towed road sweeper is sweeping equipment moved by a towing vehicle such as a tractor, truck or construction machine instead of having its own drive system. It sweeps dust, soil, chipping residue and loose material off the road surface and prepares it for the next operation.

Compared with self-propelled sweeper vehicles it offers a more economical alternative and lets the operator make use of existing towing vehicles.

Why it matters in road construction and maintenance

Before an asphalt or prime coat application the surface must be clean so that the new layer bonds well to the base. In surface dressing works, collecting the loose chippings that do not adhere both prevents stone damage to vehicles and improves the appearance of the road. For this reason the sweeper belongs to the same work chain as the chip spreader and the asphalt distributor tank.

What to consider when choosing

The type of towing vehicle and its hitch arrangement, the width of the surface to be swept, the type of material (fine dust or coarse chippings) and the frequency of work are decisive. Our team determines a suitable configuration together with you, based on the need on site and your existing vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a towed sweeper and a front-mounted sweeper?

A front sweeper is mounted on the front of the carrier vehicle; a towed sweeper is pulled behind a towing vehicle. Which one suits depends on the existing fleet and the way the work is organised.

Is it used in surface dressing works?

Yes. Collecting loose chippings after the dressing and cleaning the surface before it are common applications for this type of sweeper.

What information should I share when requesting a quote for a towed road sweeper?

The make and model of the carrier vehicle (or the towing unit), the type of road and work, the daily workload and any existing hydraulic equipment define the configuration. Dimensions and capacities are determined together with our team.
