What is a patch edge joint sealing machine?
This machine melts bitumen or bitumen-rubber based sealant in a heated kettle, keeps it at application temperature and delivers it directly to the patch edge or joint through a hose and application wand. The kettle is usually heated by a burner; keeping the material fluid throughout the application depends on this heating.
The weakest point of an asphalt patch is the edge where the new material meets the old pavement. This equipment is aimed precisely at sealing that joint line.
Why the patch edge must be sealed
If the joint is left open, water seeps under the pavement from there; with freeze-thaw and traffic loading the patch loosens and fails again at the same spot within a short time. Patch edges opening up is a common problem especially in repairs made after utility excavations. Making the edge watertight with hot sealant noticeably extends the service life of the repair.
